A southern classic. There's nothing like the warmth and comfort of homemade sausage gravy. Rich, savory, and filled with sausage crumbles, it's the perfect pairing for fluffy biscuits or breakfast potatoes.
Crumble sausage meat into a pan and cook over medium heat until browned all over and cooked through. Break into tiny pieces as it cooks.
Once sausage is fully cooked and browned, add flour and stir to combine with sausage drippings*. Cook for 3 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Gradually stir in milk until combined. Add salt and pepper to taste. Cook, stirring occasionally, until desired thickness is reached.
Notes
*Different brands of sausage vary in fat content, which can impact the texture of the final gravy. Before adding the flour, tilt the pan to get an idea of roughly how much fat has rendered out. If there is about 3-4 tablespoons of fat, you're good to go and can continue with the recipe as written. If you have more than that, remove some until you are left with roughly 3-4 tablespoons of fat. You can then continue as written.
